Is it safe to travel to africa? Travel safety tips

Is it safe to travel to africa? before start to write about travel safety tips  we would like to say one thing; it can happened anything any time anywhere in the world when traveling our just next to your home.

    Travel around the world by motorcycle, sleep in the tent, go to bush / wild camp most of the time, stop middle of nowhere…etc. try protect yourself from wildlife or people is not easy but might be necessary. We are not carrying a gun; even if we want to carry we don’t know how we can use it. 🙂 We don’t know karate, judo or something else to protect ourself. (To be honest, it can be good idea to learn a little if we have time). But still we have something to protect ourself or some plan for it. We didn’t have something when we were traveling in Europe but we had in Africa. We ride motorcycle around Africa in 1,5 years and passed 33 countries. Of course we had some problems but we handled it. If you have questions in your mind “is it safe to travel Africa right now?” it is so hard to tell because a little up to you as well. Where are you going? When are you going?…etc. This is our travel safety tips;

How can we protect ourself? What do we carry for our safety?

    • We have pepper spray with us. When we ride motorcycle it is hang on next to hand bar we can get it. When we walk it is always in our pocket. When we sleep just next to us as well.
    • We have electro-shock which is flashlight at the same time. We carry it same way pepper spray. We had pepper spray and electro-shock after a thief try to enter our tent in a secure camping site.
    • We also have small switchblade.
    • We have mosquito spray, which we use to spray tent before go to sleep. it is always next to tent and can use easily like a pepper spray.
    • Our small hammer is always next to us as well when go to sleep in the tent.
    • We don’t go out in the night if it is not necessary or our friends need to pick up us to go out. We always ask first for the area is it safe or not, we can take any taxi or we need to call somewhere. Some countries in Africa use uber taxi and we used them as well.
    • We never carry our passport with us when we go out just have copy. If police ask and has to see we tell them to go back to the hotel, camping site…etc to show them.
    • Never carry all our important paper, cards or a lot of money with us. Because if somebody steals it we never lose all of them.
    • If we go to bazaar or walk around we don’t carry our normal phones. We have one old phone, it is always with us to look for directions and roads because we don’t want to show a good phone in our hands all the time.
    • When we need shopping one of us always next to the motorcycles the other one goes to shop. Depend on the area who wait next to motorcycles.
    • We need a break sometimes when we ride motorcycle. Of course people can come next to us to talk. We always try to put motorcycle between us when we talk. Some kind of safety for us as well because they can catch you in a second.
    • If we don’t know people we don’t shake hands so often and especially in Kenya after we hear some stories. They have something in their hand when we shake hand we can lose some kind of our memories.
    • When we go to the bar we just drink beer because they always open next to us and easy to close top so nobody can put anything. We know a lot of stories about it in Africa and Brazil.
    • When we leave from tent or motorcycle we carry all important stuff with us never leave it behind. Or if we are in a hotel, camping site… we can put safe box(if they have) or give reception.

We had one of bad experience in Africa. 8 people attack us middle of the street. After that we talk a lot about our safety and decided some important rules.

    • If anybody try to enter our tent again or take something on the motorcycle “Do not run behind it!” we never know if his friends waiting on the corner and attacked.
    • If people attacked us to steel something “Do not fight with them!” because they can use their gun or knife and we could get injured there or worse.
    • If our petrol finish or break motorcycle like nowhere or one person need help because of  a injury…etc  “We never leave each other nowhere alone there!” we will find a solution together and leave the area together.
    • If the motorcycle breaks and we need to fix with somebody “Only one person will focus to work on it!” other person needs to take care motorcycle and our stuff.

I think one of the other important thing is how to prevent yourself from malaria in Africa.

We made a short video for our Africa journey, roads, life… We hope that you like to watch :

  • How to prevent diseases: Malaria in Africa

How to prevent diseases: Malaria in Africa

How to prevent diseases when you are traveling especially from malaria in Africa?

This is one thing that comes together, there are still millions of people dying from Malaria all over the world but most of them in Africa. Of course we have to deal with that as well, we are now on total 20 months in Africa and in most of the countries there is a serious threat of malaria. So how do we prevent against malaria?

We are so long in the malaria risk areas and there is no vaccination against malaria. But there are medicines who protect you against malaria like malarone, chloroquine and doxycline. Again there is a but, they are not protecting you for a 100% and for long term use they can seriously damage you body and some of them can have side effects. I’m not a doctor so cannot explain all the medicines in detail, so I’m not going to try that.

We decided to not use anything against malaria, but that doesn’t mean we don’t take care of not getting it. This is what we do and are on our opinion the most important things to do.

    – Socks, the mosquitos love your ankles.

    – Long sleeve shirt and pants, now most of your body is covered. We know that it is not easy to wear them when the temperature around 30-40 degrees especially after ride motorcycle all day under the sun. But it is the way protect ourself from malaria.

    – Mosquito spray with deet, we even put this on our clothes to protect. We have been using 70% deet on it. This doesn’t protect you only from mosquitos and malaria it is one of the thing carry with you and help how to prevent diseases because we have more fly or animals can bite on the nature.

    – Eat garlic, this is not a proven method but garlic is working like a antibiotic.

    – If we camp in a place with a lot of mosquitos we spray our inside tent before go to sleep.

This is the most you can do and it works for us, we didn’t get malaria.( still we have three more countries in Africa 🙂 ) We have been traveling with people using medicine and still got malaria. You just cannot protect yourself 100% so it’s a matter of luck, you can just prepare yourself against it. We do carry malarone with us as we can use it as a anti malaria medicine if we do get malaria, this way we can get to a place to treat us against it.

If we feel sick and our temperature is high we test ourselves, you can do this everywhere in Africa for a small price.

Important note! If you do get malaria in Africa or elsewhere in the world, treat yourself against it in the country where you are, don’t fly to your home country as they might not know what to do.

Also safety is an other issue.

  • East African Visa (EATV)

    East African Visa (EATV)

The best option for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya is the East Africa visa also called EATV. The visa is valid for all 3 countries with multiple entrée; also you can pass into Tanzania and come back (note: Tanzania is not included, you need to pay for that separately).

When we were traveling East of Africa by motorcycle we already applied online EATV visa and we paid more than what we were thinking. Because when we were applying we didn’t know that we could go to DRC, which country out of East Africa visa. So, just please read details and don’t do same mistake.

    How to get the visa;

If your first enter is from Rwanda you can apply online and pay at the door. The costs are 100 USD (cash only in USD) for the visa. (If you want to have each countries cost will be 130 USD;  Rwanda 30 USD single entry 30 days, Uganda 50 USD single entry 30 days and Kenya 50 USD single entry 30 days.)

For Uganda you need to apply online as well and you need to pay online too. The costs for the visa are now 103 USD as they charge 3% for the payment, you cannot pay on arrival

For Kenya you don’t need to apply online you can just get it on arrival at the bigger borders, you pay cash 100 USD for the visa.

The visa is valid for 90 days and you cannot extend it.

Important Note : If you leave from East African countries you lose your EATV. For example, You want to visit Virunga Park in DRC. When they put exit stamp on your EATV on the Rwanda border You cant turn back with same visa. You have to pay 30 USD to single entry visa to Rwanda or apply again online EATV. It is same for Ethiopia or Burundi as well.

All East Africa visa detail; how or where can you get visas easy.

  • Don’t lose your original documents, have two of them…

Don’t lose your original documents, have two of them…

When I was backpacker I didn’t worried that much my passport to I can lose it but now I have to take care my driver license and motorcycle register as well.

When we came to Africa we hear a lot of stories about bribes. (Good thing, we did not pay any bribes yet) For example, they took driver license or register and didn’t give back until people paid money in some checkpoints. Other exam, they took the driver license in the office to write detail, after 30 minutes later they said that they lost it. Common how can possible! But it is true.

Easy way, you should have an extra fake one :). You should make a colorful copy of your vehicle register and driver license on a thick paper. After that make it plastification. So just make a copy of your documents. We have been carrying copy of register and driver license in our pocket when we ride. Most of the time, the checkpoint just wants to see our documents. They can check and than we can keep continue. Most border crossings we use the original one. (Depends on how much they have bribe) To be honest, we are in Africa 15 months now and only one checkpoint wanted to see original documents. 🙂

But please never ever do this in Europe, North America or Australia you can have serious problem! Anyway, you don’t need second documents in these continents to safe your paper. 🙂

Also, carry a copy of your documents, which are passport info page, driver license, vehicle register…etc. Most borders wants to have also some checkpoints want to have it.

Another note; have a photo of your documents send to yourself by email. If you lose them the photo or email can be more helpful when you are in the embassy or consulate.

  • “FICHE” papers for Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania

“FICHE” papers for Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania

If you are planning to go Morocco, Western Sahara or Mauritania you should make your life easy and carry a document with a lot of copy, which is called ‘Fiche’ papers.

In the beginning we didn’t have one. Every checkpoint was asking “FISH”. 🙂 We can’t speak French, just a few words. Therefore when they said the name sound was for us “Fish”. It was a little weird to somebody saying something like that. After a while we figure out that it is a French word “Fiche”

If you are on a motorcycle like us you don’t want to wait 15 minutes under the sun with all motorcycle gears. Almost every city center enter has three checkpoints, each 5-10 kilometers when you enter and when you exit.

Fiche paper is just your info to give them and save a lot of time. You can make it in your home and than get fifty copies with you. 🙂

We made it on the road. With handwrite and then made copies. What the paper need to write about you and your vehicle:

    About you

    Your name and surname

    Passport number

    Birth date and country

    Your nationality

Your passport issue date and place

    Passport expire date

    Your home country address

    Your mother and father name

    Your job

    Family situation

    Extra

    Date of entree (country)

    Place of entrée (country)

    Motif for travel

    About Vehicle

    Mark

    Model

    Plate number

    Color

That’s it…. But please don’t forget it; I am writing English to explain but document has to be in French!

We don’t know when you travel by bus any checkpoint ask about the Fiche documents. If you are backpacker we can recommend that have some copies of document like that or have copy of your passport.

Enjoy your trip in North West Africa…. If you have any question you are free to ask.

Note, the visa starts the day you apply!

  • Comesa Vehicle Insurance ( Yellow Card) for East Africa

Comesa Vehicle Insurance ( Yellow Card) for East Africa

When traveling in Africa with any vehicle; motorcycle, 4×4, truck etc; You can have one third part vehicle insurance and use it in multiply countries which are Brown insurance (Ecowas) to Western Africa and Yellow Card (Comesa) in Eastern Africa.

Comesa insurance starts from Zimbabwe and you can use until Sudan (include), it’s writing Egypt as well but they won’t except it. The price are changing, it depends how long you want to have it and how many countries you will enter. If your plan more than 3 countries you need to have it for all countries which are Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.

We applied for the Yellow Card in Lusaka, Zambia. We didn’t get it in Zimbabwe because the prices are way to high there. If you use the Victoria falls border you can easily get the Comesa in Livingstone as well.

Before you get it you must have a Zambian insurance from the company. So you need to try to pass the border without getting any insurance, tell them you will get it in the next city and you will get the Comesa for all East Africa countries. Otherwise you need to pay the local insurance twice as you need to have it from the same company.

We paid for each motorcycle 24.5 USD for the Zambian traffic insurance and than 57 USD for 6 months  Comesa to enter all countries. (I am sure there are better deals if you search more).

The Comesa Insurance was with us Zambia to Sudan and nobody ask about it. Only, Malawi border wanted see it. Otherwise, nobody asking if you don’t do anything wrong in the traffic or accident. Her brother travel without Yellow card Egypt to Zimbabwe. He told us only Tanzania when a police stop him they asked it. He passed them with 5 USD. If you ask to us we can recommend to have it is not expensive.

  • Zimbabwe and Zambia in one visa (Kaza Visa)

Zimbabwe and Zambia in one visa (Kaza Visa)

Kaza visa allows you to visit Zimbabwe and Zambia for 30 days with multiple entrees between the two countries in one visa. So you can not leave the countries (for example, form Zambia go to Malawi and than enter Zimbabwe with same Kaza visa is not possible) but if you want to visit daily Kasane, Botswana (to visit Chobe NP) you can use the Kazungula border near to Kasane (from Zimbabwe or Zambia side) to go to Botswana for a day and turn back. The Kaza visa accepts this visit.

Kaza visa costs 50 USD but unfortunately we couldn’t get it because it’s not always available at the border in Kazungula border to Zimbabwe. It was available at the Victoria falls border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Also we asked Kariba border in Zimbabwe when we were going to Zambia for Kaza visa; They told us they don’t give in this border.

Zambia visa and Kaza visa same price. If you want to go to see the Victoria Falls from both sides Livingstone and than Kariba lake and Manapools in Zimbabwe after that Zambia again it is the cheapest way.

Both countries is so nice to travel. If you have more time we can recommend to spend a little more time to discover Zimbabwe also Zambia. If you can get visa it is so easy to travel between to countries also save money. 🙂

We had amazing time in Zimbabwe. If you like to read our Zimbabwe story just click it. Also some tips to Zambia wildlife, you can saty next to one of the national park and enjoy to watch animals.

    Ethiopia

We got our Ethiopian visa in Nairobi (Kenya), it is one of the hardest visa’s to get on our route but I think we got lucky and had a very quick. You need to have a letter of introduction from your embassy, this is because they want you to apply in your home country. But for a lot of people like us this is not possible as we are for a long time on the road.

    This is what you need;

    • Letter of introduction
    • passport copy
    • Passport photo

When you apply you need to fill in a paper, they ask for a address in Ethiopia and all your personal details. Also they want to know all countries you visited in Africa and your next destinations.

    Costs for the visa are;

    1 month 40 USD

    3 months 60 USD

    6 months 90 USD

The amount you need to pay at the bank, you get the details when you apply in the embassy.

All visa’s are single entree, they didn’t want to give us a multiple entree ( we did ask for it).

We got our visa on the same day!
